Well goodness, hello! It’s so nice that you’d like to know more about me!
My name is Rebecca Fletcher and I’m based in regional Victoria. I have been editing since 2016. Since then, I have:
- completed my Master of Creative Writing, Publishing and Editing at the University of Melbourne in 2021
- worked on over 50 books as either an editor or proofreader
- helped judge the 2024 Aurealis Awards
- helped out as copyeditor of the Government writing handbook with the Style Manual team
- conceived of, coordinated, edited and published an anthology for Ballarat Writers
- passed the IPEd accreditation exam – you can see my name in the IPEd register.
All of this is to say that I love editing and I love fiction.
Why you want me to edit your manuscript
I am experienced
I have worked on over 50 books as either an editor or proofreader (and that doesn’t count manuscript assessments!). I love working with first-time authors – I’ve heard horror stories from some people about how their editors treat them. That’s not me! If you’re not happy, then I’m not happy.
I don’t charge a fortune
This page has been tricky to write – it feels like every achievement I list is just a lead up to costing a fortune. Fortunately for you, I don’t! Feel free to contact me for a quote – I’m upfront about my rates if you contact me with what you have in mind. I also charge by the word, so there are no surprises when you get to the end.
I want you to be happy
Most authors want editing for one of two reasons: they want to self publish, or they want to submit their manuscript to agents or publishers for consideration. While the editing process for these goals is slightly different, what matters the most to me is that you’re happy with the outcome. For self publishing authors, you should be happy that your story has been told in the best way possible. For authors looking for traditional publishing, you should be satisfied that your story is of sufficient complexity and obeys any genre ‘rules’ (or at least subverts them on purpose!).
I won’t submit your work to AI engines
Sad that I have to say this, but I don’t use AI tools to summarise books or help me draft reports. I will never submit your work to an AI engine. I don’t use automatic grammar tools to help me edit either. I read every word of your manuscript many, many times to make sure that it’s all as it should be. I know that AI can’t do what I do!
